ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Saint Louis University is investigating a complaint that some members of its baseball team exchanged a series of racially offensive texts about President Barack Obama.
It happened a year ago, but came to light just two weeks ago – members of the team texting about where to eat in D.C., one joking about Obama having a KFC in the White House, and another calling him “a watermelon eatin baboon.”
Jonathon Smith, special assistant to the SLU president on diversity, says both sides are sitting down to discuss it.
“Our baseball players are aware of the seriousness of this incident and what it means for our community and what it means for them as students within our community,” he says.
Smith says the range of possible punishment for the students involved “has not yet been determined.”
Smith does not think the texts represent a “pervasive” problem of racism on the campus.
